Historic Heat Wave from July 1, to July 5, 2026

As the east coast prepares for a historic heat wave from July 1 through July 5, it is important for employers, workers, and families to take extra precautions. In Maryland, Governor Wes Moore declared a State of Preparedness on June 30 in response to forecasted dangerous heat and humidity across the state. These conditions can increase the risk of heat-related illness, especially for anyone working or spending extended time outdoors.

Extreme heat can be more than uncomfortable—it can become dangerous quickly. That is why now is the time to review heat safety practices, share resources with employees, and make sure everyone knows the warning signs of heat stress.

What is heat stress?
Heat stress happens when the body is unable to cool itself quickly enough through sweating. As body temperature rises, it can affect judgment, reaction time, and physical performance. If not addressed promptly, heat stress can progress to serious conditions such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The good news is that a few simple steps can help protect you, your employees, and your loved ones during periods of extreme summer heat.

6 tips to keep safe
• Drink water frequently—do not wait until you feel thirsty.
• Take regular breaks in shade or air-conditioned spaces.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing whenever possible.
• Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.
• Watch for signs of heat illness such as dizziness, headache, excessive sweating, confusion, or nausea.
• Check on coworkers, family members, and neighbors, especially older adults and those with medical conditions.
