6 Important Items You Should Do Before You Move!

Moving day can be the most exciting day in your life!  However, there’s no denying it can also be very stressful. Connie Phillips Insurance has compiled a list of some important things you need to do right before you move to your new home.

-Update your address

Updating your address is fairly simple, you can send a mail forwarding request through the USPS website. https://www.usps.com/manage/forward.htm

Also don’t forget to change your address information with your bank, insurance, employer, and the Motor Vehicle Administration.  This will allow you to receive important mail without interruption.

-Locate the electrical panel and shutoff valves

We strongly recommend you find out the location of the electrical panel and the shutoff water valves in your new house. If anything happens to the lights, you can just go to your electrical pane, figure out what’s up or shut the electricity off. And if there is any leak at your home, you’ll know how to shut everything off until help can arrive.

Change your locks

Replace all the locks on all the exterior door.  This simple task will keep you safe and give you peace of mind.  This way, you can freely enjoy your new home.

-Transfer all your utilities

We recommend contacting most utilities providers at least two weeks in advance. For utility services that require an installation appointment, it’s a good idea to call a month in advance. Some utilities to keep in mind are cable and internet services.

-Set up your home security system

You will want to feel safe and secure in your new home.  The first night will feel different and maybe uncomfortable.  Knowing your security system is in place will help reassure you and your family.

-Have a baby?  Baby proof your home!

Safety of your kids should be your No. 1 priority.  If you are a parent, make sure this is the first thing you do. It’s more important than anything else on this list.

Here are a few tips to make move in day easier.  Hopefully you found them helpful.  Should you have any questions about the insurance coverage, Connie Phillips Insurance offers homeowners and renter’s insurance.   Please contact our office at 888.439.0479
