While you may say that you've never had an accident of loss of goods before, how do know that your good luck will continue into the future?

While your landlord's insurance should cover any damage to the house or apartment, it usually does not cover loss or damage to your possessions. Renters’ insurance can cover this and, as it just covers usually possessions, it is relatively cheap. However it is important to check just exactly what this type of insurance will cover. For example, most renters policies — like homeowners’ insurance — does not cover for flooding. Here a separate policy should be purchased, particularly if you live in a high risk area.

How much insurance you need to buy depends on the total value of the possessions you own. Do an inventory of all your possessions prior to help you establish the amount of cover you need and keep that list handy so you can access it in the event of fire, theft or loss through a natural disaster.
