Maryland homeowners whose homes sustained a battering from the recent Hurricane Irene have been granted another extension to report flood damage. Households that experienced damage from flooding caused by the hurricane between Aug. 26 and Sept. 4, now have until Jan. 23 or Feb 1, 2012 to lodge their proof of loss claim with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This applies the flood policy holders – home insurance in Maryland does not include this type of flood coverage.
Maryland Insurance Commissioner Therese M. Goldsmith welcomed the agency's move.
“I am grateful that Marylanders will have more time to submit flood claims, as I know that many people are still struggling to recover from the damage sustained during and after Hurricane Irene,” she said.
A press release from the Commissioner's office advises that it is not necessary to live in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) to buy flood insurance. Affordable options are made available for all homeowners who qualify. To check your likely flood risk, go to the FloodSmart website.
